This is for all the Naturalista's (chemical free hair wearers) out there who are wearing chemical free hair. I know that wearing your hair natural with no chemicals in it, can some times be a chore. But great hair care is a must and with great hair care comes a maintenance regimen of trimming the hair. How often should you get your natural hair trimmed? I recommend at least once every 4 months. When/if you ever hair relaxed hair, you should be able to recall that every time you got your relaxer retouch done (every 2 months), your Stylist should have done a maintenance trim on your hair, just a "dusting" of the ends of your hair to remove any split ends. Now that you are chemical free with no relaxer in your hair, I recommend that you get a maintenance trim at least every 4 months. Ok, so you decided to go natural some time back and now what do you do.... Well being that I own a Hair Salon and being that a lot of women decided to go natural (chemical free) some time back, I see a lot of natural hair. What I can honestly say is that I do see a lot of damaged natural hair. There could be a number of reasons, but if you regularly have your hair done by a professional licensed Hair Stylist, then you can definitely inquire of him or her. But if you doing your own relaxers and permanent hair color, then that could be one of the reasons. Some lay people don't understand the chemistry behind the chemicals that are used in a professional salon. For instance, most women think that no-lye "box perms" as they are non-professionally preferred to are milder than regular relaxers used in a salon. They think oh it's gotta be mild, because I can buy it in the Beauty Supply Store and don't have to have a license. This is a misnomer. This is not true at all and couldn't be the furthest thing from the truth. Many clients want to know the difference between sodium hydroxide relaxers and no-lye (calcium hydroxide) relaxers. Well, the difference is the chemical makeup of the two. The sodium hydroxide relaxers are the more commonly used in professional salons. Sodium Hydroxide is the main chemical ingredient that straightens the hair, these relaxers have a less drying effect on the hair and they are usually only sold to licensed professionals. Although they are less drying on the hair, they do tend to irritate the scalp a bit more, causing the scalp to itch and burn faster than the calcium hydroxide (no lye) relaxers. The No Lye Relaxers contain Calcium Hydroxide and are less irritating on the scalp, causing less itching and burning during the relaxer process.
